A strange halo cloud over Moscow had many in the Russian capital expecting a close encounter last Wednesday.

Millions witnessed an ominous ring-shaped cloud appear over Moscow’s western districts, prompting citizens to stop in their tracks to record the phenomenon and put it on YouTube.

The bizarre sight has taken the Internet by storm, so to speak.

However, scientists from the city’s weather forecast service dispelled fears of extra terrestrials landing in Red Square, saying the event was strictly environmental.

“It’s a purely optical effect, even if a spectacular one. You can see really strange things if you watch the clouds regularly,” weather officials told Russia’s Vesti 24. “Several air fronts have passed Moscow recently, including an inflow of cold air from the Arctic, and they combined to produce such a phenomenon.”

Their pet dies while being groomed

LYING on its side, fur shorn off, eyes wide open, tongue hanging out, with no signs of life.

This was how Mr Devarajan found his 3-year-old Maltese terrier, Junior, after he left it with a pet groomer.

He did not think a routine grooming session could lead to his pet's death.

Neither did the other pet owners who lost their pets on the grooming table.

The SPCA said it has received seven complaints of pets dying during grooming sessions in the past year.

Currently, only pet shops selling animals are required to be licensed by the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority.
Groomers are not regulated.

Should they be?

"Pet grooming is not the same as hairdressing. An animal can be abused with no visible injuries and it won't be able to tell you," said Mr Devarajan.

A post-mortem on his dog found bleeding, possibly the result of being hit on the head.

The 47-year-old general manager had taken Junior to Strawberry Pet Shop in Jurong West for grooming at 5pm on 13 Sep. He was told to pick the dog up an hour later.

Ten minutes later, he received a call from the groomer telling him that the dog had fainted. He rushed back to the shop.

"When I arrived, I saw my dog lying there motionless. His eyes were wide-opened and his face was frozen. I carried him and his body was still warm, but there was no pulse," recalled Mr Devarajan.

Confused, Mr Devarajan tried to question the groomer. He claimed that the groomer, a Chinese national, ignored him.

"Maybe he couldn't speak English, but he didn't seem remorseful. Nor did he show any emotion," Mr Devarajan alleged. "His boss, the pet shop owner, apologised and said he was sorry my dog was dead."

The owner of Strawberry Pet Shop, who identified himself only as Lawrence, said he felt bad about the death of Mr Devarajan's dog.

"I apologised to him, but it does not mean we are at fault," he said.

"I asked my groomer if he had abused the dog in any way, but he said no. I am confident he didn't, as I let him groom my own dogs," he said.

"He might be rough sometimes, but that is only when the dogs are naughty."

Mr Devarajan said he was told that his dog had been aggressive earlier, then it suddenly fainted.

"The owner told me the groomer had tried to resuscitate my dog when it fainted," said Mr Devarajan.

He later took the dog to a vet, who found it was dead. He then informed the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) and sent the dog there for a post-mortem.

AVA investigating

According to Dr Wong Hon Mun, a deputy director of AVA, the dog died from severe brain haemorrhages, probably as a result of trauma. The AVA said it is still investigating the case.

Under the Animals and Birds Act, any person found guilty of committing an act of animal cruelty can be fined up to $10,000 or jailed up to 12 months, or both.

Two other pet owners whose dogs suffered injuries after being sent for grooming are also calling for regulation of the pet grooming industry.

Ms Amy Lim, 42, a real estate agent, who sent her dog to Strawberry Pet Shop last November alleged that not only did the groomer insist on shaving her dog bald, she also found red marks around her dog's neck from being leashed too tightly.

"When I went to pick up my dog, I saw it had been left on its own on the table in the grooming room. If my dog had jumped off, it could have hung itself on the leash," she said.

The pet shop owner, Lawrence, claimed her dog had to be shaved as its fur was in bad condition.

"Her dog was not injured but she later came back to complain, so I gave her back her money," said Lawrence.

The owner added that his groomer, 24, was certified in China, had work experience and even some veterinary knowledge.

The groomer, who declined to reveal his name, said he has been working as a groomer for three years.

Ms Lim remains disturbed by the incident. She said there should be licensing and certification of pet groomers here.

"There is no way a pet owner can know for sure how trained or experienced a groomer is," she said.

Dog owner Jessica Tan, 28, shares the same concern. She had paid $30 for a grooming session for her dog at Pet's Club, a pet shop on Serangoon North Avenue 1, but had to fork out $300 later in veterinary fees after it was injured by the groomer.

"The pet shop owner gave me Burnol antiseptic cream to apply on my dog's cut and told me it would heal in no time," said Miss Tan.

Miss Tan added that she asked the pet shop owner if a product meant for humans could be used on dogs. The reply: Yes.

Five days later, the cut on her one-year-old Maltese terrier, Yuki, was infected and oozed pus. It required six stitches to sew up the cut.

When interviewed, the groomer of Pet's Club, Mr Herbert Lim, 42, admitted that he had accidentally cut Miss Tan's dog with clippers during grooming because it was moving around a lot.

"It's only a cut. These accidents happen every day. It's not a big deal. It wasn't intentional, it's not as if a whole piece of skin came out," he said, adding that he still felt bad about the incident.

Mr Lim, who said he was a certified dog trainer and groomer, claimed he had delayed compensating Miss Tan as he wanted to verify with his vet that the amount she wanted as compensation was justified.

Went Mountain Biking with my Dad and his friend.. Was quite a challenge trying to conquer the first slope.. After trying and having failed 2 times...

One nice guy advised me on the best way to get up. And after the next try. YES! I managed to get up..

Though proud of my achievements, they were worn away quickly when a secondary school boy went up that same slope with ease and on the harder side!

Though filled with cuts and bruises, it was worth it.

Today struggled to wake up.

Once up tried to call Auntie Annie to get a lift to the airport.

However I kept calling... They said the no. was not in service.

I checked with a few ppl. All gave me the same no.
I tried calling Jerome to no avil too.

In the end I drove to the airport alone.

Rare tongue-eating parasite found

A rare parasite which burrows into host fish before eating and replacing their tongues with itself has been found off the Jersey coast.

Fishermen near the Minquiers - islands under the jurisdiction of Jersey - found the isopod, a type of louse, inside a weaver fish.

Marine researcher Paul Chambers, from the Société Jersiaise, was one of the fishing party and identified the find.

He said he was surprised to find the isopod away from the Mediterranean sea.

Isopods are normally about 2cm (1in) long and live in fish, surviving on the animal's blood, in warm waters.

'Quite vicious'

Mr Chambers told BBC Jersey: "When we emptied the fish bag out there at the bottom was this incredibly ugly looking isopod.

"Really quite large, really quite hideous - if you turn it over its got dozens of these really sharp, nasty claws underneath and I thought 'that's a bit of a nasty beast'.

"I struggled for weeks to find an identification for this thing until, quite by chance I stumbled across something that looked similar in a Victorian journal.

"Apparently there's not too much ill effect to the fish itself except it's lost its tongue."

Experts at the University of Southampton confirmed that the creature was an isopod and that there had been several sightings of them in Cornwall in 1996.

Mr Chambers added: "It doesn't affect humans other than if you do actually come across a live one and try and pick it up - they are quite vicious, they will deliver a good nip.

Went for a Little Visting...

Morning:

My usual swimming routine. Swam 100 laps. The only difference is that I managed to swim more freestyle than other strokes! Very proud of it! I did 10 laps without stopping. My latest achievement. My best was 4 before.

Afternoon:

Went to visit my friend in the hospital. He had just gone for an op a few days ago to remove his large intestines due to a some growth. He is recuperating in the hospital and will be out hopefully this saturday.

Evening:

Went for dinner with Amanda at Subway. Had my usual Tuna sandwich. Sent her to the airport and now on the way to back home for my 2nd round of dinner.

Morning:
Wanted to go swimming today! My usual routine but felt that I should go tomorrow cuz I have bowling after that..

Afternoon:

Went bowling with Chuen Rong, Shawn,Jerome and friends. Haven't played for awhile.. Started off with a low score of about 50 and on the final 4th set finished at 95. Chen Rong on the other hand was on a bowling spree with a top score of 145.

Evening:

Drum Roll everyone!! Based on the rumors Apple will be releasing new iPod touches and iPod Nanos with cameras and some added functions!

I might be getting one.. Or perhaps wait till next year when they bundle it free when I get my Macbook Pro! Let's see how tempting this will be.. :)

Morning

Suppose to meet my friend for swimming but due to weather it was cancelled

Afternoon

Sent the car for repair. Brought my bike along cuz it would take a few hours to repair. Cycled home after leaving the car at the workshop.

Evening

Was called to go down to collect the car.. They replaced the disc brakes and now works fine!

While there I was there I saw a Subaru Imprezza that was wrecked completely with it's airbags deflated

Another car - I believe a Honda fit was badly damaged in the front.

The Day started with a slight drizzle..

I had trouble getting out of my cozy snuggly bed...

Finally with much effort I manged to get ready to go to the Arts House..

Alas I was late..

Tickets were pricy at $19.50 for adults with a group of 4 or more.

For Youths 12-17years old, it was $17 which was also on the high side.

The tour started and we started off by watched a short intro in a mini movie theatre.

After we were taken to three rooms by a tour guide who told us all about the history of the DSS and about the history of the Bible till present.

Before heading for lunch.. We passed by the statue of Standford Raffles and decided to be the "Fake" Raffles..

While walking towards our lunch place.. Chuen Rong and Shawn had a great idea to use their umbrellas which were "Converted" to "snipers".. The pic below says it all
